What’s in a name?

“If you don’t think your anxiety, depression, sadness and stress impact your physical health, think again. All of these emotions trigger chemical reactions in your body, which can lead to inflammation and a weakened immune system. Learn how to cope, sweet friend. There will always be dark days.” – Kris Carr

As Joe Biden goes live on air to read the newest mandates from a teleprompter (with only a few mistakes!), I find it worth a bit of effort to wander back through recent online history in an effort to discover just how we got to this point. If 20+ years of critical care nursing taught me anything, it’s to always remain curious! Where better to start than the CDC website?

Let’s begin by defining terms, shall we?

09/09/2021 Vaccine: A preparation that is used to stimulate the body’s immune response against diseases.
03/17/2020 Vaccine: A product that stimulates a person’s immune system to produce immunity to a specific disease, protecting the person from that disease.
01/10/2009 Vaccine: a killed or weakened form of a disease organism that can be introduced to provide immunity.

That was fun, let’s do it again with another!

09/09/2021 Vaccination: The act of introducing a vaccine into the body to produce protection from a specific disease.
03/17/2020 Vaccination: The act of introducing a vaccine into the body to produce immunity to a specific disease.
01/10/2009 Vaccination: The act of introducing a vaccine into the body to produce vaccine-induced immunity.

Also of note, back in 2009, the CDC explained antibodies, the difference between active vs. passive immunity, and that active immunity could be achieved either through natural exposure to the contagion OR through vaccination. The site describes active immunity as long lasting back then, too.

If you really wanted some quality content on the subject, though, you’d have to time travel all the way back to 06/29/2006, when the CDC provided a link to a 55 page online mega-pamphlet of sorts from the NIADH. It’s a quick and informative read, and since I found it for you and saved the link…no time travel required.

Ok, class…what have we learned? Language matters! The CDC has been tweaking definitions over time so that the standards by which we traditionally judged vaccine effectiveness no longer apply. Want to guess now how the influenza “vaccine” went from offered to the elderly and fragile, to suggested, to encouraged….until it became mandated for even young and healthy nurses annually? CDC guidance, folks. Magic!

Until next time,

Cherilyn
